Angelo Web Design has now turned 5 years old! It’s a proud milestone for me, I’ve managed to turn my childhood hobby into a successful business. Revenue has more than doubled over the past year, and the business is going from strength to strength.

I’ve decided to mark the occasion by writing this article, looking back on my journey over the past 5 years.

Where it began

I started my business towards the end of the Covid pandemic, and began trading in April 2021. It was still an uncertain time for everybody, with government restrictions looming over the country. Luckily the web design industry was one of those least affected by the pandemic, because we can work remotely without any issues. Many businesses got a new website built during the pandemic, as they couldn’t rely on brick and mortar sales due to restrictions.

Strong foundations

To start with, I did a lot of white label work for other agencies. Many marketing companies don’t have a web developer in-house, but still sell websites to clients by outsourcing the work. This provided me with a consistent stream of work, but the ultimate goal was to get my own client base – because the margins are lower with white label work.

In addition, I got a lot of work through the Fiverr platform which was experiencing rapid growth at the time. That gave me the chance to build websites for clients all around the world, including the USA and Australia. Fiverr was really valuable for me as a new business, although I have recently left the platform – something I’ll touch upon later in the article.

Further growth

There was a bit of a rocky end to 2021, but I went into 2022 with a renewed vision. I was working with more of my own clients directly, becoming less reliant on white label and Fiverr. One of my favourite websites I built that year was Ultimate Blend, a bespoke Shopify website for a client who sells nutritional supplements. The website is still going strong to this day.

Business remained at a consistent level until 2025, I worked with hundreds of clients across a wide range of industries. This further developed my skillset, and I built specialist knowledge in new areas.

Expansion

Throughout 2025 I started working with several clients in the energy installation industry. These are companies who install systems like boilers, heat pumps and solar panels. I’d worked with a few installers previously, and I have a particular interest in that industry. My favourite website I built last year was Future Heat, a complex website with instant quote tools. Customers can get a price in minutes for services like solar panel installation, pay their deposit, and book a survey. The website has already helped bring in millions in revenue for them, and it’s had over 50 thousand visits!

Over the past 12 months my sales have more than doubled compared to previous periods – which is fantastic growth. This is due to a combination of factors. I’ve become a trusted name with installers who are looking for a website, and continue to work with more of them. I also have some brilliant clients in the healthcare sector.

A renewed vision

I’m now focused on building more complex web applications, including custom web portals and bespoke software for clients. These applications help my clients automate their processes, and provide massive value to their businesses. I’m also building things like instant quote tools and booking systems, that can streamline the entire sales process for a business.

I still build lots of WordPress websites for clients too, and provide ongoing support through SEO and Website Maintenance. I recently left the Fiverr platform due to their high fees, and the revision system which unfortunately some buyers exploit. I much prefer working with clients directly, which leads to better communications and results.

Conclusion

The web development industry continues to boom, despite all of the noise around AI. It’s brought in more work for me, and I enjoy fixing some of the absolute slop it generates. If you want to look like a serious business, I’d avoid “AI website builders” at all costs.

I’m really excited to see what lies ahead over the next couple of years, and I’ll be keeping the momentum going! Thank you to all the clients who have worked with me and supported me over these past 5 years. I hope your businesses continue to thrive, with the help of my website services of course 😄

Introduction

In 2025, the news is ablaze with hype about the latest AI tools. Many fear that AI will take our jobs, and we will be living in a dystopian reality. In this article, I explore how AI has affected the web design industry – drawing upon my personal experiences.

I’m Luke, the director of Angelo Web Design, and I’ve built websites for hundreds of small businesses in the last few years. AI has changed the way we create websites, but is it a good thing?

1) AI generated content is everywhere

The majority of small business websites I see now use AI copywriting. Small businesses and startups tend to have a limited budget for their website, and with the advent of ChatGPT a lot of businesses see copywriting as an unnecessary expense. Data from Originality found that 16.6% of websites in Google Search results now use AI content, as of May 2025 [1].

As a web designer, AI copywriting has been a positive for me. It means less waiting round for content from clients, which used to delay projects in the past. Not all AI content is created equal though, and detailed prompts must be used – or the copy generated will be of poor quality. I see common errors like American spellings on UK websites, which indicates that people aren’t proof-reading text before pasting it onto their website.

I still recommend that clients invest in professional copywriting services for their website, if their budget allows for it. I work with several copywriters who deliver great content that stands out from generic AI text. On websites I find that “less is more” when it comes to text. AI-written websites tend to have long walls of text and filler, whereas human copywriters can write concisely and have more impact with fewer words. People have a short attention span, and will lose interest in a website if it looks like a novel.

AI generated content is everywhere

2) Content entry tasks have become easier

When I’m building a website, content entry is often a time-consuming task. Ecommerce stores can have thousands of products, and this data must be imported onto the website when it’s built. ChatGPT can format a CSV file in seconds, and get all of my product data into a format that’s compatible with WooCommerce or Shopify. This saves valuable time, because I don’t have to spend hours messing about with spreadsheets.

In addition, AI can format plain text so it’s ready for use on a webpage. It can automatically add heading tags and paragraph tags, along with hyperlinks. This means you can write an article in a document, then use AI to transform it into HTML that follows best practises for SEO. As a web designer, I’ve been able to reduce the time I spend on monotonous tasks, so this is another huge positive.

3) The overall quality of websites has declined

Forbes reported there are an estimated 1.2 billion websites as of March 2025! [2] As the internet becomes saturated with more websites, I believe the overall quality of websites has declined. Startup businesses are now turning to instant AI website builders, which produce cookie-cutter websites. These websites are of poor quality, and rely on generic stock images and uniform-like layouts.

I’ve had several new clients come to me after an AI website disaster. I take the time to get to know their business, so I can build a website that shows off its unique personality. I also ensure the website is optimised for their specific goals, such as generating more leads or appointment bookings. AI models rely on assumptions and statistical probabilities, but every business is different. In an ocean of poor-quality websites, a human created one will always rise to the top.

We’ve always had pre-built website templates and themes, and AI website builders are another extension of this. If you’re serious about growing your business online, you should always invest in professional website development services.

The overall quality of websites has declined

4) Organic website traffic has decreased

Upon launch, I install Google Analytics & Search Console on all of my client websites. Since Google’s updates and the new “AI Overview” section, I’ve noticed a decrease in organic traffic across many websites. Entrepreneur stated that Google’s AI Overviews are already slashing organic traffic by as much as 64% [3] – which is an alarming statistic.

SEO has changed dramatically, and I’ve adapted to Google’s updates. Content must demonstrate Experience, Expertise, Authority and Trust to outrank competitors. I always advise my clients that SEO is an ongoing investment and not a one-off gig. I provide monthly SEO packages, where I regularly produce high-quality content that targets a wide range of keywords.

If you want a high volume of website traffic, it’s now vital that you invest in paid advertising alongside SEO. Facebook Ads and Google Search Ads are affordable ways of increasing traffic, this reduces your reliance on organic search results and unpredictable algorithms.

5) Demand for web design has increased

NatWest reported that the number of businesses operating in the UK has reached a record high [4] – over 5.6 million businesses are now active in the UK. When someone is starting up a new business, a professional website is often one of the first things on their list.

At Angelo Web Design, we’ve had a record-breaking year so far and have seen a sharp increase in demand for our web design services. The web design industry is still thriving in 2025, despite scaremongering in the media about AI and LLMs.

In March 2025, internet sales accounted for 26.3% of all British retail sales [5]. For businesses who sell physical products, it’s vital they have an online-store in combination with the traditional brick and mortar model. Building a high-performing Ecommerce website requires the help of a professional web developer. AI tools are incapable of building complex stores, and understanding the unique selling points that make a business stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Demand for web design has increased

Conclusion

In my personal experience, AI has had a positive impact on the web design industry. It’s made it easier for human-built websites to stand out, and outperform cheap generic websites. Content creation and content entry have become easier, and AI has helped me focus on more complex development tasks.

As AI becomes more advanced, I believe it’s important that web designers and developers keep improving their skillset. This will help you produce visually stunning websites that drive real results for businesses. The website market has become more saturated, but the cream always rises to the top. Don’t get drawn in by the media doom and gloom about AI, take time to research Large Language Models and how they actually work. They are flawed systems that often spread mis-information.

Introduction

In this article, I will be explaining the top 10 ways to build trust with your website visitors in 2025. In this digital world, reputation is everything. Your website is like a shop window, and it’s often the first impression people will get of your business.

At Angelo Web Design we’ve built websites for hundreds of small businesses! We make sure their websites build trust and credibility, using the 10 methods below.

1) An SSL certificate

Your website must have an SSL certificate to build trust with website visitors, and ensure that your website is fully secure. SSL is short for “Secure Sockets Layer”. This is an encryption-based security protocol for your website that was first established in 1995. Basically, it encrypts the connection between your website, and your website visitors. Any data that customers enter on your website is encrypted by SSL, this is absolutely vital for online stores where people are entering payment information.

If your website doesn’t have an SSL installed, it will be marked as “Not Secure” in web browsers like Google Chrome. Comodo found that 51% of users say they would leave a website marked “Not Secure” immediately [1]. Having an unsecure website makes your business appear suspicious and can damage its reputation.

SSL Certificate builds trust

2) Customer Reviews

People are constantly searching Google to find the best deals for products and services, and online reviews can be the deciding factor. Research by BrightLocal discovered that up to 98% of consumers read reviews before making a purchase [2]

Your website should show reviews that meet the following requirements:

– Recently published reviews, ideally less than 12 months old.

– Use reviews from reputable platforms, like Google Reviews.

– Only show genuine reviews from your real customers. Showing any fake reviews may damage your brand’s image.

– For online stores, you should allow customers to upload reviews with images. Images of them using your product can help build social proof with potential customers.

Alongside your reviews, you should include a button where people can click to view all of your reviews on the original platform. E.g. they can click to view all of your Google Reviews. This helps people verify that your website’s reviews are real.

3) Photos of your staff

People buy from people. Having high quality photography of your staff will enhance your website and build trust with visitors. Seeing a friendly face puts people at ease, and lets them know who they’ll be dealing with if they purchase your products or services. Many modern websites rely on fancy graphics and illustrations, with no real people or faces to be seen. This creates a “faceless” feel on your website, and makes it lack identity.

With AI being shoved in everyone’s faces, using real photography makes your business stand out and look authentic. Research by AdLib found that adverts with human faces perform better than those without [3]. Showing staff photos will make your website more memorable and create a stronger connection.

4) Contact information

Your company’s contact information needs to be clearly visible on your website. You should include a “contact us” page, and also include contact details in your website header and footer. Showing accurate contact information builds trust, because people can see you’re a real business and they can get in touch if they require support.

Many websites use AI chatbots for customer service, which can frustrate your website visitors and lead to bad reviews. Research from Five9 found that 75% of consumers prefer talking to actual humans for customer service [4]. Showing your phone number and email address allows people to easily contact you, without talking to a pesky chatbot.

5) Industry Accreditations

You should show any industry accreditations or certifications your business has. For example, care companies should show if they’re CQC approved and gas engineers should show they’re Gas Safe registered. All accreditations you show should be up to date and fully accurate.

An article published by Venuez stated that International Standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 enhance brand trust and prestige [5]. If your business has any relevant accreditations or certifications, show them off! The issuer of the accreditation will often have logos you can download and use on your own website.

6) A clearly visible logo

Your brand’s logo is often imprinted in people’s memory. Iconic graphics like the Nike tick flash into your mind when the name is mentioned. Linearity reported that 75% of customers recognize a brand by its logo alone [6].Having your logo on your website builds trust and can help people recall positive memories of your business. It also reassures them they’re on the correct website and not a fake one.

7) Areas you cover

Many customers prefer to shop local and support local businesses. A poll by DJS Research found that 63% of shoppers prefer shopping locally [7]. Make sure you take advantage of this on your business website.

Your website should show where your business is based, along with the towns and cities you operate in. This means website visitors can instantly see if you’re a local business and if you cover their area.

Areas you cover

8) Recently published content and seasonal offers

When I’m browsing the web, I often see ancient websites with their last blog post being published over 5 years ago. This suggests that the business hasn’t updated their website in many years, and they may no longer be trading. Not updating your website can destroy trust and cause you to lose out on potential sales.

You should regularly publish new content and articles on your website, along with seasonal offers throughout the year. Events like Christmas are the perfect time to promote special offers on your website, and boost your sales. Forbes reported that the average lifespan of a website is just 2 years and 7 months [8]. You shouldn’t just launch your website and never update it again. Learn how to update your website yourself, or work with a web design agency who provide Website Maintenance services.

9) Fast loading times

We’ve all been on slow and clunky websites that take forever to load. It makes you feel frustrated and creates an uneasy feeling. Your website should load quickly across all devices, this will help build credibility and keep people on your website. 47% of people expect an average site to load in under 2 seconds [9]. To make your website load faster, you should compress your images and avoid having large video files which autoplay.

A professional web design agency like ourselves can help boost your website’s page speed, and ensure it’s running at maximum efficiency.

Website page speed

10) An “About Us” page

There is a story behind every business – your website needs to tell yours. You should add a detailed About Us page, with a description of your company and its history. It’s also useful to include profiles for your staff members, so people can get to know your team. Having a good about us page is fantastic for building trust and making your business look authentic. When someone lands on your website for the first time, they often know nothing about your company. People like to thoroughly research a business before committing to a purchase, and this vital page can boost your probability of making a sale.

Conclusion

Those are our top 10 ways of building trust with your website visitors. They are simple and effective, and we’ve found they increase conversions on our clients’ websites and help them generate revenue. There are many other factors to consider when building your website, to ensure it shows your business in a positive light. Where it all began

Hi, my name’s Luke and I’m the founder of Angelo Web Design – a professional web design agency in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. I founded the business in 2021, after previously working for another local web agency.

My website building journey started long before that though, I built my first ever website back in 2010, aged just 13. My first websites were centred around online gaming, and the FIFA franchise. I created websites for gaming tournaments and leagues, where people could compete against each other. One of my websites amassed over 3,000 members, and generated revenue from Google Ads.

Luke Angelo - Angelo Web Design

Self-Taught Skills

I was hooked on website design and development right away, and spent countless hours studying it online. Some of my most valuable learning experiences were from YouTube videos. One YouTube channel in particular taught me a lot of skills – DevelopPHP by Adam Khoury [1]. He had comprehensive courses on how to build a membership website using PHP, all completely free on YouTube! I used this valuable resource to learn how to build my own membership website, for my gaming community.

College

I continued to study IT and web design as part of my college courses. I knew I wanted to make a career out of building websites, and I dedicated myself to strengthening my skills. In my spare time I kept creating different websites, and learning coding techniques. I taught myself all the fundamentals of the key coding languages – HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and SQL. I achieved excellent grades at college, and received several offers from universities.

University

I was accepted onto my dream course at the University of Huddersfield, to study Web Technologies. This degree taught the fundamentals of both front-end and back-end website development. It was during this course that I first started using WordPress. Prior to that, I had coded all sites completely from scratch or used the Joomla CMS.

Overall the course was a great experience, I further developed my skills in an academic environment. I also met tons of great people and made friends for life. My favourite module on the course was Web Programming. As part of that module we worked with lots of different JavaScript libraries, and learnt how to build Progressive Web Apps. The course also had team projects where you could work alongside other designers and developers. It was clear that some people excelled in front-end, and some more in back-end development. All the top web design agencies employ separate people for designing and developing, and learning how to split these tasks was a valuable experience.

My first job

Straight after my course finished, I started applying for web design jobs in the local area. I received several job offers straight away, and chose to work for a local web design agency in Huddersfield. It was a fantastic place to work, and I developed my skills to a high standard. I got the chance to work with businesses from a vast range of industries, and strengthened my communication skills.

Do you need a degree to become a web designer in the UK?

Do you need a degree to become a web designer?

If I was to go back and do it all again, I would definitely go to university and get the degree. My advice to aspiring web designers and developers would be to study as much as you can, using online resources. Websites like YouTube have thousands of hours of free content, where you can learn all of the key skills. But alongside this, you need to be getting a formal education and working towards an undergraduate degree.

According to a 2024 report by Tripepad [2], there are 48.7 applicants per job and there’s been a 24% decrease in jobs advertised. Entry level web design jobs in the UK often have hundreds of applicants, and it can be a struggle to get your foot in the door. Having a degree gives you a massive advantage over other applicants, and gives you the best chance possible of starting a career in Web Design.

A study by Universities UK [3] revealed that 73% of UK graduates say going to university got them the job they wanted. Having a degree in web design or a related field will really make you stand out, and shows how dedicated you are to the career path.

The apprenticeship route

If University isn’t for you, the apprenticeship route is a fantastic way to establish yourself in the industry. This gives you a chance to get a formal qualification, whilst getting hands-on experience in the industry. These apprenticeships will tend to have less applications from university graduates, so that gives you a better chance. Indeed is a good place to start your search, use search terms like “Web Design Apprentice” to find opportunities [4]. Related apprenticeships like software development and digital marketing often have a web design element as part of the job, so sometimes you can take an alternative route.

Can’t you go self-employed straight away?

Without working for another agency, I would not have developed the skills I have today. Building websites as a hobby is completely different to working with real businesses, and meeting their expectations. Even if you are incredibly talented at building websites, communicating with clients is a huge part of the job. Working for an established agency helps you develop these skills, and see how businesses in the industry operate.

Web design is a highly competitive field, and as a freelancer you must deliver an excellent level of service to stand out from competitors. Shape reported that there are 2,041 professional web design agencies operating as of 2024 [5]. Businesses expect a highly professional service, and if you’re clueless about project management or how to manage a large website build, then you will really struggle.

Conclusion

From my personal experience, yes you do need a degree to become a web designer in the UK. We have a highly competitive job market, and there has been a fall in the number of jobs being advertised. The ONS [6] found UK job vacancies fell by 26,000 in the first quarter of 2025 .

Going to university and getting a degree gives you a stable foundation for your career, and gives you the best chance possible when applying for jobs. It also gives you the chance to meet new people and expand your social circle, so you really do get the best of both worlds. Alongside academic education, you should be building websites as much as possible in your free time, and watching online courses. Web design is a fun and rewarding career path, and I hope this article helps you forge your own career in the industry!

1. A Website is Your Best Lead Generation Tool

Gone are the days when word-of-mouth and business cards were enough. Today, when someone needs an electrician or a gas engineer, the first thing they do is Google it.

A well-optimized website helps you:

✅ Rank on Google – SEO-friendly content helps your business appear in local search results.

✅ Capture leads 24/7 – A contact form or booking system allows customers to reach you anytime.

✅ Convert visitors into customers – A professional design with clear calls-to-action encourages inquiries.

Without a website, potential clients will go straight to a competitor who does have one.

2. Credibility

Imagine a potential customer searches for your business and finds… nothing. No website, just a Facebook page with outdated posts. That’s a red flag. In 2025, consumers expect businesses to have an online presence.

A high-quality website:

✅ Shows you are legitimate and trustworthy

✅ Highlights your experience, qualifications, and services

✅ Features customer reviews to build confidence

Would you trust a random tradesperson with no online presence? Probably not. Your customers think the same way.

3. Stay Ahead of the Competition

Many trade businesses still don’t have a website or rely solely on word of mouth. Referrals from family and friends are valuable, but can’t be relied upon for a consistent source of leads. A quiet month could always be lurking round the corner. That’s why you need a professional website that generates leads all year round!

With a well-designed website, you:

✅ Stand out from competitors who don’t have one.

✅ Consistently generate leads from digital marketing campaigns.

✅ Can integrate Google My Business to appear in local searches.

By investing in a professional website now, you future-proof your business.

Affordable Trade Business Websites

4. It’s Affordable

Many tradesmen avoid getting a website because they assume it’s expensive. The truth? A professionally designed website is an investment that pays for itself through increased leads and jobs.

With options like:

💰 Affordable website packages for trades

🔧 Monthly payment plans

📈 SEO and marketing add-ons

It’s easier than ever to get a website that fits your budget and grows your business.

Conclusion

In 2025, customers expect professionalism, trust, and easy access to information. A well-designed website is the key to winning more jobs, building credibility, and staying ahead of your competitors.

If your trade business doesn’t have a website yet, now is the time to invest. Angelo Web Design specializes in websites for electricians, gas engineers, and window & door installers. Let’s build a site that gets you more leads and more customers.

Introduction

A picture speaks a thousand words, and that sentiment rings true in the world of Web Design. The best websites make use of stunning photography, which draws the attention of visitors. But is photography the most important part of a website, or just a small part of the puzzle? In this article, we explore the importance of photography on a website in 2023.

Why is photography important for your website?

1) Visual appeal:

High-quality images can help to make a website visually appealing and engaging. Photos can help to break up long blocks of text and draw visitors in, making them more likely to stay on the website and explore its content.

2) Branding:

Photography can help to establish a brand identity and communicate the tone or personality of a website. For example, a website that sells luxury goods may use high-end photography to convey a sense of elegance and sophistication.

3) Informational value:

Photos can also provide valuable information about products, services, or locations. For example, a website that promotes a tourist destination may use photos to showcase the area’s natural beauty or cultural attractions.

4) Emotional impact:

Photos can evoke emotions and help to create a connection between the website and the visitor. For example, a website that promotes a charity or social cause may use photos to tug at the heartstrings and inspire visitors to take action.

5) Search engine optimization (SEO):

Including relevant, high-quality photos on a website can also improve its search engine ranking, making it more likely to be found by potential visitors.

Should I hire a professional photographer for my website’s photos?

For many businesses, hiring a professional photographer is the right choice for your website’s photographs. If you have the budget for a top photographer, this can prove a wise investment. You will be able to get quality photography which is truly personal to your brand. Having photos of your business premises and employees creates an instant connection with website visitors, and re-enforces a feeling of trust.

We always recommend clients organize a photoshoot if they are getting a new website. If you are on a tight budget, you can do a photoshoot yourself. All you need is a smartphone, and a clear plan for your photoshoot. Look to get a mixture of landscape and portrait photography for use on your website. Wide angle images are fantastic for full width banners, but you may need a wide angle lens to get a proper panoramic photograph.

What about stock photography?

Stock photography can be a useful resource for website owners who need high-quality images but don’t have the resources to create them from scratch. However, there are some pros and cons to consider when deciding whether to use stock photography on your website.

Stock photography is less expensive than hiring a professional photographer, or designing custom graphics from scratch. Stock photography websites also have a huge library of images, based on different topics. This makes it easy to find the right image for your website, and downloads are available on demand.

The main drawback of stock photography is a lack of originality. Because stock photos are available to anyone, they can be overused, making your website look generic. Furthermore, some stock photos may appear staged or inauthentic. This can detract from your website’s credibility. It’s important you choose stock photography carefully, and think about the message it sends out to potential customers.

Is photography the most important part of a website, or just nice to have?

Photography can be a crucial part of a website, but it is not necessarily the most important part. The importance of photography depends on the type of website, its goals, and its target audience. For example, a website that sells products online may rely heavily on high-quality product photography to showcase their products effectively and entice customers to make a purchase. On the other hand, a website that provides information or services may not require as much emphasis on photography.

Other factors that are important for a website’s success include usability, functionality, navigation, content quality, search engine optimization, branding, and user experience. A website that is easy to use, visually appealing, and provides valuable content is more likely to engage visitors and achieve its goals than a website with only great photography but poor usability or content. Therefore, while photography can certainly enhance a website’s appeal, it is not the only or most important part of a successful website.

Is There A Developer Shortage In The UK? https://angeloweb.co.uk/2021/12/14/is-there-a-developer-shortage-in-the-uk/ Tue, 14 Dec 2021 15:16:41 +0000 https://angeloweb.co.uk/?p=1190 As another Covid Crisis looms over the UK, demand for Software & Web Developers has grown exponentially. But are there enough developers to meet this demand?

The post Is There A Developer Shortage In The UK? appeared first on Angelo Web Design.

Introduction

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on how businesses think and operate. Having a strong digital foundation has become key for survival during these times. Many non-essential retailers had their stores completely closed by restrictions, giving them no choice but to sell products online.

With continuing uncertainty, UK businesses are keen to ‘safeguard’ themselves against future lockdowns. This has lead to a huge increase in demand for Software and Web Developers. Some businesses have faced difficulty in their recruitment drive, which leads to the question – is there a developer shortage in the UK?

Ecommerce

What Is A Developer?

A developer is someone who builds software or applications, using coding languages to achieve desired functionality. People who develop Web Applications tend to be given the term “Web Developer” as opposed to Software Developer. There is a key distinction between a developer and a designer – a designer focuses on visual appeal and content creation. Whereas a developer focuses more explicitly on functionality and usability, often working with database-driven applications.

How Big Is The Demand For Developers?

As of December 14th 2021, there are a staggering 30,000 adverts on Indeed for developers. There are 8,873 adverts specifically looking for Web Developers. Such high figures are indicative of a skills shortage within the industry, which could lead to catastrophe for some firms.

Why Are There So Many Vacancies?

There is no simple explanation for the shortage of developers, there have been a range of contributing factors.

Brexit

Many EU Nationals work within development roles across the UK. Following the UK’s withdrawal from the EU in 2020, it has become more difficult for candidates to move to the UK and fulfil vacancies. There is a new Points-Based-System, and there is a charge to a company to hire a candidate by the system (approx. £1,500). The government have recognised the shortage in the tech industry, and Tech Roles meet the requirements of the new system. This means Software Developers can still move to the UK if there are sponsored by a suitable company [1].

Fierce Competition For Candidates

As the market becomes more saturated with potential employers, candidates are able to demand a higher salary. This means smaller firms may struggle to meet the salary expectations of more experienced developers. Larger software companies are in a better position to monopolise the recruitment of developers, and turn the head of candidates with salaries and job perks.

Remote Working

The salaries on offer have increase markedly, but money isn’t the only draw for the modern developer. With the advent of remote working, a more flexible work environment is preferable for many candidates.

According to research by RADA Business [2], 45% of respondents were either very or extremely interested in making remote working a permanent arrangement after the pandemic. More than three in five of 16-24 year olds polled said they wished to continue home working full time or a “hybrid” arrangement.

Remote working can lead to great productivity, a better work-life balance and less expenditure on commuting. Cutting down on commuting also reduces an individual’s carbon footprint, which is important as people become more eco-conscious. If a firm fails to offer remote working, it risks being left behind in the recruitment market.

How Many Developers Are There In The UK?

According to research by Statista [3], there were approximately 408,000 Programmers and Software Developer’s employed across the United Kingdom in 2020. This means approximately 0.6% of the population would classify themselves as a developer. These employees are spread across a plethora of industries, including Web, Gaming and IT Services.

How Can We Solve The Shortage?

Lower The Requirements For Entry

Many firms are only looking for candidates with many years of experience, but many experience developers are already in employment. Firms can adapt by reducing the amount of experience required, and looking for more Junior Developers as opposed to senior roles. This lowers salary requirements, but does lead to an increased need for training. Training the right candidate can be a wise investment in the long-term.

Make The Industry More Attractive

To attract more candidates, companies should create opportunities for people with non-computing backgrounds who are looking to re-train. Organizations should advertise the benefits of being in the tech industry, and draw in candidates from other sectors.

By focusing on education and development, a company can broaden its pool of candidates. There are fewer ‘ready-made’ developers with experience, but anyone can learn to code with the right guidance.

Working as a developer can lead to fantastic salary opportunities and better job security. Businesses and universities should highlight this, and encourage more young people to embark on a career as a developer.

Conclusion

Although there is a shortage of developers in the UK, it is not a major crisis. Other industries have been hit a lot harder by the pandemic, for example – the Road Haulage Association estimates there is a shortage of more than 100,000 HGV drivers in the UK [4].

There is an increased interest in learning to code. A European Wide study by Red Hat found that 1 in 20 adults took up coding or some form of development training in 2020 [5]. This is great news, and people have realising upskilling can improve their career prospects.

With more time spent at home, it’s easier than ever for someone to learn to code. Free resources and courses exist all across the web, and so many open-source languages exist. The development industry should continue to thrive, and the developer shortage may disappear in the near future.

In this blog we are going to take a quick look at the Web Design market in the UK, and the current state of the industry. What is the UK Web Design industry worth?

UK web design has an estimated market size of £563 Million with almost 2000 web design companies operating across the nation. The average growth of the industry was estimated to be around 4% between the years of 2015 and 2020. This demonstrates the continued development of the industry, and it’s ability to evolve with changes in technology. Increased internet access has played a part in this growth. With 4G Networks being widely available, people are just a thumb-swipe away from accessing your website. This means web design is more important than ever – a website can engage your customers even when they’re out and about.

Who are the biggest web design company in the UK?

Little data exists on who the biggest company in the UK are. The largest companies in terms of revenue are based in London.

Surprisingly the industry has no companies with a market share above 5%! This means the market is far from a monopoly, and the wealthy is distributed quite evenly. This is a stark contrast to markets such as social media, where Facebook own a 52% market share in the UK, dominating the industry.

I believe having a more equal market is a great thing for web designers in the UK, it means you have more opportunities to shine and you won’t have to compete with giant corporations. It is such a creative industry with a range of different skillsets. There is a big difference between a back-end coder and a front-end designer, and both of them can succeed in the industry. There is no ‘best web designer’ in the country, everyone has their own quirks which make their sites stand out.

What is the impact of coronavirus on the industry?

Revenue has dipped by an estimated 2.5% throughout 2020-2021. This is undoubtedly a result of the coronavirus pandemic, and the huge financial burden it has placed on businesses. Web design has fared well compared to other industries though, and it has shown great resilience. The UK pub market was estimated to have declined by 60% in 2020, there have been heartbreaking losses for many pub owners. I sympathize with all small business owners who have been affected by the pandemic, and I hope for an economic boom once this is behind us!

As businesses are forced to operate online, this has created demand for new websites. I have seen increased demand for food delivery websites, online reservations (click and collect), and many people are wanting ecommerce sites. Entrepreneurs can still sell nationally through a website, harnessing the power of software like WordPress & WooCommerce to run online stores.

What does the future hold for the industry?

Online shopping accounted for 33% of retail sales at its peak in 2020, according to the Office For National Statistics. This is a silver lining for web developers, because it demonstrates how important a website still is – even as the world changes. Websites are vital for reaching a wide target market, and I believe demand for quality web design will continue to grow.

There are almost 1.6 Billion Websites worldwide, and the web shows no sign of stopping. Web Design continues to be one of the fastest growing industries in the UK, with new jobs being created. I have witnessed huge demand for skilled web developers, and companies are willing to spend big on the right talent. I hope 2021 will be a strong year for the industry, and we can enjoy continued success.
